On the coast, glass has to do more than frame the view. Hurricane-impact systems use laminated glass and reinforced frames designed to stay in place when wind-borne debris strikes, helping keep the building envelope closed through a storm.

Questions

Do I need impact windows on the Texas coast?

Requirements depend on location and building type. Much of the Texas coast falls in the Texas Department of Insurance catastrophe area, where windstorm certification is generally needed for insurance through the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. We will confirm the requirements for your address.

Are impact windows the same as hurricane shutters?

No. Impact glazing stays in place all year — there is nothing to install before a storm. The laminated glass is designed to resist debris impact and remain in the frame.
