Frequently asked questions

Curtain walls, storefronts, uPVC, impact glass, bullet-resistant and soundproof glazing, steel windows — straight answers.

General

What does Big Glass Texas do?

Big Glass Texas designs, engineers, supplies and installs large-scale glazing: commercial curtain walls, window walls and storefronts; residential window walls and full-home glazing; and specialty hurricane-impact, bullet-resistant and Corten, brass and steel systems.

Do you work on commercial and residential projects?

Both. Commercial Robust serves offices, hospitality, retail, healthcare and multifamily. Texas Euro uPVC, Lone Star Classic and The Texas Special serve homes, from efficient replacements to fully bespoke estates.

Where do you work?

We are based at 11610 Harry Hines Blvd in Dallas and work across Texas — Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, San Antonio and the Gulf Coast — and on select projects nationwide.

Are you related to BigDoorTexas?

Yes. BigDoorTexas is our sister company for oversized pivot doors. Lone Star Classic and The Texas Special are shared, so doors and glass can match.

Can you help early in design?

Yes. Early involvement is where glazing saves the most time and money. We offer design-assist, budgets, system recommendations and mock-ups for architects, owners and general contractors.

How do I get a quote?

Send drawings or a description through the contact form, call (945) 391-8528 or email bigdoortex@gmail.com. We usually reply within one business day.

Commercial Robust

What is the difference between storefront, curtain wall and window wall?

Storefront sits between floor and ceiling, usually at ground level. Curtain wall hangs from the structure and runs past the floors as a continuous facade. Window wall sits between floor slabs, common in multifamily towers. Robust includes all three.

Do you work with general contractors and architects?

Yes. Most Robust projects come to us through the GC or architect. We provide design-assist, budgets, submittals, shop drawings and installation as the glazing subcontractor.

Texas Euro uPVC

Is uPVC the same as vinyl?

uPVC is unplasticized PVC — the rigid, European-style material used in multi-chamber window profiles. Texas Euro uses steel-reinforced uPVC profiles with European hardware, which differ from many builder-grade vinyl windows.

Does uPVC hold up in Texas heat?

Quality uPVC profiles are reinforced and use colors and foils designed to reflect heat. We will recommend profile colors and sizes suited to each elevation and sun exposure.

Lone Star Classic

Is Lone Star Classic the same collection as on BigDoorTexas?

Yes. Lone Star Classic is shared with our sister company BigDoorTexas, so windows and oversized pivot doors can match exactly.

Can I upgrade a few openings to a higher tier?

Yes. Many homes use Lone Star Classic throughout and The Texas Special for the main living wall or entry.

The Texas Special

How large can a Texas Special glass panel be?

It depends on the system, the glass build-up and site access. We plan panel sizes early with your architect so the dream size is also deliverable and installable.

Can the glass walls be motorized?

Yes. Many Texas Special sliding walls are offered with motorized, keypad or smart-home operation.

Hurricane-Impact Glazing

Do I need impact windows on the Texas coast?

Requirements depend on location and building type. Much of the Texas coast falls in the Texas Department of Insurance catastrophe area, where windstorm certification is generally needed for insurance through the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. We will confirm the requirements for your address.

Are impact windows the same as hurricane shutters?

No. Impact glazing stays in place all year — there is nothing to install before a storm. The laminated glass is designed to resist debris impact and remain in the frame.

Bullet-Resistant Glazing

Is there such a thing as bulletproof glass?

Strictly speaking, no — the accurate term is bullet-resistant. Glazing is rated to stop specific threats, such as the UL 752 levels, and must be installed in a frame with a matching rating to protect as designed.

Can bullet-resistant glass look like normal windows?

Yes. With the right build-up and framing, bullet-resistant glazing can sit alongside standard glass with closely matched sightlines and appearance.

Soundproof Acoustic Glazing

Can windows really be soundproof?

Not completely — but acoustic glazing can dramatically reduce noise. Performance depends on the glass build-up, the air space, the frame and the seals, so we specify and install the whole assembly together.

What is the difference between STC and OITC?

STC measures how well glazing blocks mid- and high-frequency sound such as voices. OITC focuses on low-frequency outdoor noise such as traffic, trains and aircraft. For street and flight-path noise, OITC is usually the better guide.

Can you soundproof my existing windows?

Often, yes. A secondary interior glass panel with a wide air gap can add significant noise reduction without replacing the original windows, which suits historic homes and occupied buildings.

Corten, Brass & Steel Glazing

Will Corten steel rust onto my building?

Corten forms a stable protective patina. During the first weathering period it can release runoff, so we detail drainage and adjacent surfaces to protect stone, concrete and paving.

Are steel windows energy efficient?

Traditional steel windows are not thermally broken. We offer thermally broken steel systems with insulating glass where energy performance matters.
